Jamel Akib - Born 1965

Jamel was born in Leigh-on-sea, Essex, in 1965 to mixed English and Malaysian parentage and moved to Sabah, North Borneo at the age of five returning to England to pursue further education at thirteen.

He gained a BA Honours Degree in Illustration in 1989 at Maidstone College of Art where he learned from Gerald Rose. He began working for the London Observer newspaper while still a student at art college and has since become an award winning artist involved in many exhibitions and commissions in the UK & abroad. He has so far illustrated the covers for three Booker prize finalists.

Jamel's awards include:
2016 - Mall Galleries, RSMA exhibition - "The Artist magazine" Award
2015 - Mall Galleries, RSMA exhibition - "Charles Pears" Award
2015 - Shortlisted for the "David Shepherd wildlife artist of the year" at the Mall Galleries
2010 - "Americas Book" award for Children's and Young Adult Literature
2009 - Honor Book in the Picture Book Category of the 2009 American Libraries Award for Literature
2004 - "Marion Vannet Ridgeway" award for best Children's book for 'Monsoon'
1996 - "Creative Review" magazine - 'Best editorial award
1994 - "Victoria & Albert Museum" awards for illustration - 'Best Editorial' award
1993 - "Victoria & Albert Museum" awards for illustration - 'Highly Commended' award
1992 - "Maxwell Business Publishing" - 'Best Editorial' award
